CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Studio 9 offers instructional courses based in both classical and contemporary training: our programs include Children's Program Classes, Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Lyrical, Tap, Hip Hop and TLC (turns, leaps, and conditioning) classes. Children's Program Coursework:
Parent & Tot – A 30-minute introductory course to music & movement. This class is geared towards toddlers ages 18 months to 3 years, and is designed for parents to participate alongside their child. This class is an excellent transition into our Pre-Ballet program for three & four-year-olds. Attire: anything that both parent & dancer can move in.
Mini Movers- This class follows current music trends seen in movies, music videos and television. This class is high-energy and fun. Classes include conditioning and warm-up, simplified break down of each dance step, skill combinations and choreography. All moves and music are age appropriate and level specific. Mini Movers is geared toward kids ages 3-4. Attire: Anything that dancers can move easily in and tennis shoes
Stompers- A 30 minute course designed for children ages 3-4 who are ready to venture into the classroom independently while learning the beginning foundations of tap. Students will learn some basic tap skills, increase their motor skills, musicality and rhythm to reach goals in a fun creative way. Attire: Anything that dancers can move easily in and black tap shoes.
Pre-Ballet – A 45-minute course designed for children ages 2-4 who are ready to venture into the classroom independently. The students will learn the basic skills of ballet through creative movement in a nurturing environment, while encouraging their enthusiasm for dance. Attire: any colored leotard, tights and pink ballet shoes.
Broadway Babies- A 45 minute course designed for children ages 2-4. This class combines imaginative play, singing, acting, and movement to introduce and establish the building blocks of the performing arts, foster creativity, and nurture self-esteem. Through songs, musical theatre games, stories and dance, these budding performers learn in a playful and creative environment. Attire: any colored leotard, tights and pink ballet shoes/tennis shoes.
Kindy Combo – An hour long course designed for children ages 3-4 that follows the same model of the Pre-Ballet class with the added element of tap dance. Attire: any colored leotard, tights, pink ballet shoes for ballet and black tap shoes for tap.
Advanced Kindy Combo-This is the perfect class for children ages 4-5 that have already taken Kindy Combo, or are new to Kindy Combo but slightly older. Advanced Kindy Combo is an hour long course that follows the same model of Kindy Combo class with added curriculum for ballet and tap. Attire: Any colored leotard, tights, pink ballet shoes for ballet, black tap shoes for tap.
Beginner Ballet/Jazz – An hour long course designed for children ages 4-5 that extends the training of the ballet curriculum taught in Kindy Combo, with an introduction to jazz. The students will increase their knowledge of ballet and jazz terminology, techniques, barre work, isolations, stylized movements and flexibility.
Attire: any colored leotard, tights, pink ballet shoes for ballet and black jazz shoes for jazz.
Beginner Tap/Hip Hop – An hour long course designed for children ages 4-5 that extends the training of the tap curriculum taught in Kindy Combo, with an introduction to hip hop. The students will increase their knowledge of tap and hip hop terminology, techniques, floor work, isolations, stylized movements and flexibility. Attire: any colored leotard, tights, black tap shoes for tap and tennis shoes for hip hop.
Junior Hip Hop- This class follows current music trends seen in movies, music videos and television. This class is high-energy and fun. Classes include conditioning and warm-up, simplified break down of each dance step, skill combinations and choreography. All moves and music are age appropriate and level specific. Junior Hip Hop is geared toward kids ages 5-7. Attire: Anything that dancers can move easily in and tennis shoes.
Ballet Program Coursework:
(Note~some levels may be combined)
Ballet I – A course designed for ages 6-8. This class focuses on extended barre work, increased demi pointe work, strengthening and stretching and ballet terminology. Ballet I is required one time per week. Attire: Light pink leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes.
Ballet II – A continuation of Ballet I, this class is an hour long that is required to be taken twice per week. Attire: light blue leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes.
Ballet III – A continuation of Ballet II, this course is required twice per week. This class is geared towards the intermediate student and focuses on longer barre work, more intricate center combinations and strengthening exercises preparing dancers for pointe work. Attire: light purple leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes.
Ballet IV – A continuation of Ballet III, this course is required three times per week. This class focuses on technical proficiency, strength and musicality. Pre-Pointe and en pointe are included at this level. Attire: Forest green leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes.
Ballet V – A continuation of Ballet IV, this course is required three times per week. This is a more advanced level of ballet, and is for the dedicated dancer and performer. Pointe work is included at this level. Attire: Navy blue leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes.
Ballet VI – A continuation of Ballet V, this course is required three times per week. This is Studio 9’s second most advanced level of ballet, and is for the dedicated dancer and performer. Pointe work is included at this level. Attire: Burgundy leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes.
Elite Ballet –A continuation of Ballet VI, this course is required three times per week. This is Studio 9’s most advanced level of ballet, and is for the dedicated dancer and performer. Pointe work is included at this level. Attire: Black leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes
Teen/Adult Ballet – A course geared towards the beginner/intermediate dancer. It is open to students and adults who want to take ballet without a serious commitment. Attire: Any colored leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes.
Jazz
This class focuses on stylized movement through improvement of flexibility and technique, strength, turns and leaps and jazz choreography. It also emphasizes musicality and body alignment. Jazz classes are offered to students age 5 and older, and students will be evaluated and placed in an appropriate Jazz Level for their ability. Students are highly recommended to be concurrently enrolled in a ballet class. Attire: Any colored leotard, leggings, bootie shorts and jazz shoes.
Lyrical/Contemporary
This style of class(es) is a combination of ballet and jazz that challenges dancers to use motion to interpret music and express emotion. It includes intricate, highly technical, and naturalistic moves. Lyrical/Contemporary classes are offered to students in levels 2+ and has a requirement of concurrent enrollment in a ballet class. Attire: Any colored leotard, leggings, bootie shorts and half shoes.
Hip Hop
This style of class follows current music trends seen in movies, music videos, and television. This class is high-energy and fun for both boys and girls who want to learn some Old School style influenced by some of today’s hottest video choreographers. Classes include conditioning and warm-up, simplified break-down of each dance step, skill combinations and choreography. All moves and music are age appropriate and level specific. Hip Hop classes are offered to students age 18 months and older. Attire: Anything that dancers can move easily in and tennis shoes
TLC (Turns, Leaps, & Conditioning)
This style of class focuses on a dancer’s overall strength and flexibility, combined with increasing the technique and precision of a dancer's turns and leaps. It is designed for dancers to increase flexibility and tone core muscles to decrease likelihood of injury. It also includes various components of pilates, yoga, cardio workouts, calisthenics, and essential nutrition for dancers. TLC is offered for dancers that are in levels 1+.
Attire: Any colored leotard, leggings, bootie shorts, half shoes & tennis shoes
Tap
This style of class studies a percussive style of dance focusing on different rhythm patterns and combinations. Combinations involve intricate footwork with an emphasis placed on musicality, syncopation and occasional improvisation. This class is offered in various levels for students age 5 to adult. Attire: Anything that dancers can move easily in and black tap shoes.
Acro/ Tricks & Turns
Acrobatic Dance, or acro as it is commonly referred to by dancers and dance professionals, is the beautiful fusion of classic dance technique and the precision and athleticism of acrobatic elements. Often defined by unique choreography, acro dancers seamlessly blend musicality, emotional expression, line and extension with acrobatic movements in a dance context. Attire: any colored leotard, leggings, bootie shorts and bare feet.
Feet & Flexibility
This class is for dancers ages 11 and up it includes work Thera-Band exercises, like pointing and flexing the feet in parallel and turnout. Students work on flexibility by drumming their toes (lifting the toes off the floor and lowering them one at a time), and they do abdominal work to strengthen their cores. Attire: any colored leotard, leggings, bootie shorts and bare feet.
